Gift Nifty edged lower, Asian markets inched down

Local stock markets are poised for a slightly weak start today. The Gift Nifty April 2026 futures have edged lower by 0.06 points, hinting at a soft opening for the benchmark index today. The domestic equity market fell in last session, with BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 modestly lower.The BSE Sensex has edged lower 4.90% over the last one month, while the NSE Nifty has posted modest losses of 4.77% over the same period.


In Asia today, sentiment was soft. China’s SSE Composite Index drifted lower 1.22% while Japan’s Nikkei 225 inched higher 1.23%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index eased 2%.


Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 5,027 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers to the tune of Rs 4,301 crore in the Indian equity market on 24 September 2026, provisional data showed.


Overnight on Wall Street, stocks posted modest losses across the board. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished lower by 161.61 points, or 0.31%, and closed at 51370.98. The S&P 500 drifted lower 0.09% to end at 7771.75, and the NASDAQ Composite remained flat to 26958.53.


Yesterday, the S&P BSE Sensex posted modest losses of 1247.71 points or 1.67% to 73580.54. The Nifty 50 index slipped 383.70 points or 1.64% to 23063.10. Cipla Ltd was top gainer in Nifty 50 yesterday, edging up 1.16% to Rs 1399. The stock has posted modest gains of around 1.43% in last one-week and is weaker 10.47% over last one-month.


In sectoral indices, only Nifty IT index eased yesterday, shedding 0.44% on the day.
